Here at Pitre Buick GMC, we like to share practical knowledge with our customers on how to best care for their vehicle without spending money on a trip to the garage. Have you ever been in a rush to get to work in the morning and discovered a dead battery? Here are some ways to check the life of a car's battery without heading to the shop.

Firstly, make sure the terminals are free from any acid gunk released from the battery. If acidic residue is present, you should very carefully clean them off with household items, like baking soda and an old toothbrush used for cleaning around the home.

You can also perform a load test to check your battery. Turn on your headlights for roughly 10 to 15 minutes and then crank the engine. If your headlights dim significantly, it's time for a new battery.
